B2B Social Media Calendar Worksheet

Written by Debra Leitl on October 30, 2010. Posted in Social Media Marketing

When you are building a business online it is becoming increasingly important to integrate a social media plan into the scope of your business and marketing plan. Why? Because social media is becoming an important tool that online businesses use to target their audience and keep in touch with their clients as well as other professionals in their industry.

What’s more, as sales of high end mobile devices has gone through the roof in recent years which means your audience is opting for mobility. This is forcing online business owners to adapt to a society that is choosing mobile tools to communicate, shop online, and keep up with the latest current events.

So what exactly does a social media plan involve and what are some of the steps you should take to create a plan that is appropriate for your line of business? Well contrary to belief that you should target technology first, there are steps in the plan that you must accomplish before deciding what social media technology you are going to use for your social media outreach.

Who is Your Audience and Where Do They Hang Out?

During the creation of your business and marketing plan you identified your target audience and some of the things they are searching for when it comes to the topic of your business. Now it is time to go to the social media platforms to find exactly where they hang out and then listen to what they are saying. What are they asking for? What are they saying that they need? What is their tone of voice? Listen carefully to the questions so you can devise a plan for meeting those answers and needs.

Establish a Focus

After you have listened carefully and taken some notes, focus on what you do best and then measure it up against what your audience is asking for. Decide what it is that you can do better than other businesses of your type and skills you have which your market needs. You will find that the best return on investment lies in focusing on a few specific needs that you can meet through social media instead of trying to be a “jack of all trades and master of none.”

What Are Your Objectives?

Don’t keep saying “if” to yourself. Instead say “when.” This means establishing specific objectives for how you are going to reach out to your target audience through social media. Get real and get specific with your objectives along with detailed descriptions on how you are going to achieve them. Don’t worry about it being perfect because it won’t be until you get going. Only then you will be able to make the changes to refine your plan.

What Are Your Goals with Social Media?

Decide where you want to be with your target audience in social media a year from now, a few months from now, a few weeks from now, and then tomorrow! Make sure your goals are detailed, measurable, attainable, and planned with deadlines for meeting each step. Also, make sure you plan them with the resources that you currently have instead of resources that you plan to have down the road.

Leave the Technology for Last

If you don’t know your target audience, you do not have any objectives, and you have not planned a strategy, there is no way that you will know what social media tools will help you to best accomplish these three essential parts of your social media plan. It would be the equivalent of not knowing where you want to go and trying to find the fastest means of transportation to get you there.

These are five key things you must include in your social media calendar worksheet which will be the basic survival needs for creating a successful social media plan.
