How to Get Your Site Indexed Quickly in the Search Engines – A Basic To Do List

Written by Debra Leitl on February 28, 2011. Posted in Search Engine Optimization

One of the issues with preparing your website for indexing with the search engines is that it takes an indefinite period of time before you see it appear on the search results page. If you are anxious to get started this can be frustrating, plus, you must work harder at other faster methods for generating traffic while you are waiting for the search engines to take notice. Meanwhile you are probably thinking there must be an easier way!

Well…not necessarily easier but there are some strategies you can use to help your website get indexed faster.

“To Do” List for Getting Your Website Indexed Faster

  • Directory Submission: Submit your site to website directories that are high profile and respected by the search engines. These are usually the paid directory submission sites which will provide a quality link back to your site. By offering quality content on your site your chances are better for getting listed with one of these directories.
  • Social Media: If you have been participating in social networking sites such as Facebook, Digg, and Twitter, keep up the participation because the links you have pointing to your site are considered quality links by the search engines. If you have not gotten involved with social media it is not too late to start offering quality content on these sites with a link back to your website.
  • Create a Sitemap: A sitemap is a .txt file that you place in the root folder of your website to instruct the search engine spiders where to go on your site. Use the standard text format to create a sitemap for your website. This is the format you can use so all of the search engines can find their way around your site.
  • Use Google Webmaster: Use your Google webmaster site to submit your site once you have completed the sitemap. Google tends to favor its own programs so this is an immediate plus if you use their applications.
  • Set Up RSS Feeds: RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and highlights any changes you have made to your website. RSS allows others to receive updates to your website and garners the attention of the search engines to tell them you are consistently expanding your site.
  • High Traffic Low Competition Keywords: Finding keywords that have high traffic and low competition can be difficult, however come as close to it as you can. Use the keywords on targeted web pages and in your linking strategy.
  • Create a Link Wheel: If you are still working on your link building strategy create a link wheel by submitting content to a circle of websites that are considered trustworthy by the search engines. These are article marketing sites, social media sites, social bookmarking sites, video marketing sites, and blogs.

Keep in mind that you may not get every one of the pages of your website indexed but if you play your cards right eventually you will get most of them listed.
