Use Facebook To Collect EmailsMany business owners are aware that they need a Facebook fan page to establish a Facebook presence.  What many do not realize is that they can use their Facebook business page for list building.  Are you one of them?  If so, you are not alone as many business owners are unaware of the list building capabilities on fan pages.

If you are looking for reasons why you should build a Facebook page or you already have a page up and running, here are a few tips on collecting email addresses with your business page.

Using Your Business Page to Capture Email Addresses 

First, it is important to note that there is more to collecting email addresses on a Facebook page than simply clicking the tab and adding an opt-in form.  To really build a quality list of subscribers you must use an innovative approach that motivates people to share their email address with you.  This requires two key factors for your approach to be successful:  1) A compelling invitation and, 2) A reason that your prospects can relate to.

The invitation must provide your fans with something in return for their email address.  The item does not have to be of high monetary value and can be as simple as a free ebook, a link to a high quality video training series, or some other type of information that you know is useful to your prospects.

The reason you provide to your prospects should correlate with their reason instead of yours.  In other words, the reason should reflect some type of irresistible benefit that provides a solution your prospects are seeking.  Once you have figured out a creative approach:

  • Create an Emotional Connection:  It is not enough for you to simply post an opt-in form with an offer.  Remember this is social media so you must also create some kind of connection.  You can do this through the use of graphics and an innovative design that triggers some type of emotion.  You can create this in Photoshop or some other type of imaging program and then upload it to your opt-in text area.
  • Design the Opt-In Form:  You can use an email management program such as MailChimp or Aweber to create a professional looking opt-in form.  Once you create the form you are provided with HTML code that you can paste near the image you created and uploaded to your Facebook page.  Since the opt-in form is also considered to be an image you will need to add <img src= to the beginning of the code and then add /> to the end of the code.  This ensures your opt-in form will display properly on your Facebook page.  The code is then applied to the Static HTML application feature on Facebook. 
  • Test the Opt-In Form:  Once you have everything setup you can test the opt-in by clicking on the Save and View tab.  Make sure you test under View as Fan and View as Non-Fan to ensure it displays properly in both settings.  You can also change the name of the tab if you wish by navigating to Apps on the administration panel.  Simply choose Edit Settings on the tab you want to change and then change the name to whatever you want.  Click on Save then OK and that’s it.

Using your Facebook business page to collect email addresses will provide you company with sustainability since it helps you to develop long term relationships with your customers.  This is what the smart marketers use who are not interested in just making a one time sale.  Opt-in lists are for business owners who are in it for the long haul.
